Busan Cinema Center Nearing Completion

The construction of the Busan Cinema Center by architecture firm COOP HIMMELB(L)AU is nearing completion. Slated to be the new home of the Busan International Film Festival, the complex will house cinemas, restaurants, a 1000 seat multifunctional theater, and numerous public spaces. One of the signature elements of the design is the world’s longest cantilever stretching out over the streetscape 85 meters with an incredible roof surface of 60×160 meters. Defying gravity, the space frame cantilever is anchored into the ground through a large cone shaped column housing the main entry and café. Further enhancing the overall experience, the underside of the cantilevered roof is covered with a dynamic LED lighting surface. Once the complex is fully operational the LED surface will function as a dynamic light show tailored to events of the Film Festival and serve as a canvas for visual artists. Indoor and outdoor performance spaces will be able to accommodate up to 6,800 visitors across the wide variety of spaces. Upon completion, the entire 60,000 square meters of performance, dining, entertainment, and administrative space will mark an excellent addition to the city of Busan.
