LIKEarchitects shared with us their project BusStopSymbiosis. This project is one of the five artistic interventions selected by Scott Burnham to emerge in downtown Porto as part of the event Bairro Criativo* launched by ADDICT on 24 May 2010. It was awarded with the first prize. Competitors were asked to think of temporary structures for the public space aiming to improve people’s daily life in the city. BusStopSymbiosis is as urban happening were a temporary strange and colourful installation lives on an ordinary bus stop creating a relationship beneficial for both structures. It’s a new urban equipment that aims not only to increase the sitting space of the existing bus stop, but also to entertain those who are still waiting for their transportation as well those who are just walking nearby.

Being totally digitally conceived and produced using computer-numerically controlled cutting (CNC) processes on the OPO’Lab Fab’Lab, the 95 geometrically variable components were completely fabricated within few days. Looking like a red LochNess monster BusStopSymbiosis created general admiration, surprise and curiosity during its week lifetime. Is it a bench? Is it a piece of art? Is it a huge magazine rack? Some national televisions were on site to record the moment.
