Designing a contemporary Japanese restaurant can be a challenge. The tired and repetitive approach such spaces have been acquiring as of late, brings us to an attempt on looking for its identity escaping these clichés and looking for direct references on traditional Japanese design and contemporary architecture.

Refusing to obey to predetermined codes, we have created a space which is able to correlate to a contemporary architectural language and retain its own voice.

From this dichotomy comes a proposal that materializes using ripped wooden plans, which reveal the interior in a discreet fashion, as well as a Japanese related graphic, expressed on the cuttings and the ceiling and wall’s metal plans, allowing a fluidity of light disguised behind them.

The colour transition proposed also allows us to change functions within the same volume. From the dark brown entry and hallway, to the pure white on the dining room, we have intensified one’s emotions along the path.

Light, always light, is the unifying factor and vehicle for the wholeness of this space.
