Unknown at the time, Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers stunned French president Georges Pompidou with their radical proposal that won the competition to construct a cultural center in Paris. Unlike anything seen in the architecture world before, their high-tech modern cultural center exposed the infrastructure of the building and offered a flexible plan that would be able to accommodate an ever-changing variety of exhibits and program. This historical cultural institution exemplifies success. After its opening in 1977, the Centre Georges Pompidou has become one of the most visited attractions in France, bringing over six million visitors through its doors per year.
