Flow 2 / Studio Gorm

Short on space but still need the functionality of a kitchen? Check out this cool design we spotted over on Core77 designed by Netherlands-based design firm Studio Gorm. This super efficient and highly compact design creates a “living kitchen” which marries nature with technology. The kitchen provides a place for not only the preparation of food, but also the means to grow, store, and even compost food. Our favorite aspect is the vertical dish rack, which is positioned in such a way so excess water benefits the herds that sit in planter boxes beneath it.

Constructed from Formica on lacquered MDF, urban salvaged oak, Oregon fir and enameled steel, the kitchen is packed with different elements that work together and act as “simple vehicles for the more complex natural processes to do the work. ” The studio added, “This kitchen is developed as a flexible system where resources are reused by several elements creating a dynamic flow between the products.”

The firm, noting that 40% of household waste can be composted, has included a vermicomposter (worms breakdown food and turn it into worm castings, a nutrient rich fertilizer, in about 3-6 weeks). The fertilizer can be used in the herb boxes.

A bag rack can accommodate market bags or other shopping bags, as well as hold different vegetables.

The porous nature of the unglazed earthenware jars, teamed with the beech wood lids’ natural anti microbial properties, create the ideal space for storing breads, garlic and onions.

The standard refrigerator has been completely replaced by an evaporative cooling fridge box which uses evapotranspiration to keep food cool. Water slowly moves through the double wall and evaporates, keeping the box at a consistently cool temperature perfect for produce, eggs, and such.
